The Drive: June 26th, 4pm – Special Teams is a problem

  • The Huskers were in multiple games last year but special teams took them out of it.
  • Don’t have to be great, just better

The Drive: June 11th, 5pm

  • This day in Sports History – Birthdays
  • Nebraska Special teams last year were AWFUL…If they were average, what would the record have been?
  • Which coach would you take…Bo Pelini not getting replaced up until Frost getting hired, or Frank Solich not getting replaced up until Frost gets hired?

Nebraska football gets a walk-on kicker/punter over the weekend…could there ever be as bad of a year in placekicking as we saw in 2019?

-Tyler Crawford from Oklahoma announced he’ll join the team as a preferred walk-on…whether he’s good or not or the answer or not…can the kicking game ever be as bad as it was last year ever again?

Another strange game for Nebraska, but this one results in a comfortable win over Northern Illinois

-The game had strange scores throughout, including a 30-5 halftime score, thanks in part to a bizarre playcall that led to a safety by Nebraska, as well as tons of special teams blunders for both teams throughout the first half

-All in all, though, Nebraska wins 44-8, and it was a pretty stress-free second half for Scott Frost, players, and the fans, for the first time in ever. What’s the big takeaway? Injury concerns for Brendan Jaimes and Cam Taylor Britt…but we did see Kanawai Noa finally do something!

6:25 – We’ve discussed offense and defense when it comes to getting Nebraska over the hump this year…but how much does special teams need to improve, and how much can it?

-We still go back to 2014 for the last time Nebraska had a big-time returner, with Demornay Pierson-El…since then? Not much. A decent return here or there, but in general—disappointing.

-How much emphasis should there be on finding solid returners in the Fall? Not just one guy—multiple. It’s a phase of the game that for some reason has been below average for 4 straight years at Nebraska. Can they emphasize the return game in camp? And who punts this year? Pickering solid at kicker….
