The Drive: February 2nd, 3:25pm – Parker Gabriel (Lincoln Journal Star)

  • What were the talks between Lubick and Montana State like?
  • Lubick with more responsibility
  • Significance of bringing the whole staff back

Is being notably nervous in an introductory press conference a fair reason for fan doubt?

-Nick Sirianni appeared nervous in his introductory press conference with the Eagles. Do fans put too much stock in composure at press conferences?

-We’ve begged forever for the state of Nebraska to have better talent…and now it appears as if it’s too good to even stay in state in some cases…does Nebraska have any shot with any of them still?

-Michigan State came off a COVID break and got blasted by Rutgers and then beat by Ohio State…what do you expect from Nebraska when they return to play on Saturday?

-Do you believe the team will win a conference game this season?

Are you happy for elite Nebraska high schoolers when they go to big time college programs or do you anger instead?

-This is for all sports—not just football/basketball. Nebraska does a good job of keeping football players in-state, but seeing players like Xavier Watts go to Notre Dame was painful to a lot, but it made many others happy to see him go to a big name program

-For basketball….it’s a different story. Some guys were late bloomers that you missed (Mike Daum), and others, like the upcoming classes (Hunter Sallis, Isaac Traudt, Chucky Hepburn) are going to go big-time.

Dustin Diamond, “Screech” from ‘Saved by the Bell,’ dies at age 44…what were Jake and Sip’s go-to shows growing up?

-Diamond had stage 4 lung cancer and passed away on Monday. ‘Saved by the Bell’ was quite possibly the biggest TV show of the 90s…Jake was a little too young to appreciate it…what were Sip’s shows growing up?

Rick Kaczenski (Former Nebraska/Iowa DL coach)

-If Matt Lubick leaves Nebraska, do you replace him with a new WRs coach or find a special teams coordinator?

-How often are player transfers actually helpful to a team vs. being detrimental? Lots say addition by subtraction..

-Does Nebraska have what it needs right now to go to a next level next year as a football program?

Today is Groundhog Day…how long until Nebraska men’s athletics escape the time loop?

-The groundhog will either see his shadow or won’t today, but for Bill Murray in the 1993 movie, it didn’t matter—everyday was the same day

-Nebraska football and basketball feel the same way. There was a glimpse of hope in late 2017 when Scott Frost was hired, and then again in 2019 when Fred Hoiberg was hired, but they haven’t been able to escape the time loop of pain. Is this cycle going to spin out in the positive direction soon or do you have your doubts?

The Drive: February 1st, 4:25pm – Matt Lubick is NOT leaving

  • Montana State is not taking Nebraksa’s OC away
  • Bringing all the assistants back is a good idea

Scott Frost says the coaching staff will stay as it currently is for 2021…

-Frost talked to the Journal Star on a Zoom session on Friday and confirmed that the 10 main assistant coaches will all remain for 2021, and that he’ll split coordinating duties with Matt Lubick

-Many people are upset about this, but Jake cautions the anger and to look at Northwestern before we start to complain too much…they NEVER change assistants in good seasons or bad…and they are good more often than not. Can we learn from them on how to stick with things instead of always panicking?

-Also, the Super Bowl matchup is set…is it what we wanted to see? How were the championship games?
