Mike Schaefer (Nebraska 247 Sports): Part 1

-Who is more important to Nebraska football having success on offense this year: Dedrick Mills or Wan’Dale Robinson?

-How much can we truly learn and assess about this defense after playing such an elite team and offense in week 1?

-Can Nebraska’s special teams truly be any WORSE than last year?

Dedrick Mills has a backup RB, but it’s not Rahmir Johnson—it’s Ronald Thompkins, per Ryan Held

-WHOA! We had heard that Thompkins was having a good camp, but many still believed the No.2 RB job was still Rahmir Johnson’s to lose. That was obviously not true, as Ryan Held said yesterday that Thompkins will get the first carries that Dedrick Mills doesn’t get at RB

-Held said that Johnson has been getting work as a kick returner, though, as well as a variety of other players. He says the backfield depth is the best he’s had since he’s been here…coach speak or true?

-More from yesterday’s post-practice Zoom session…

Why aren’t Nebraska fans drinking the Kool- Aid this year?

-Why 4–4 could be a major improvement this season.

-5-3 could be borderline top 25.

-6-2 is best case scenario… Nebraska fans still know good football if they see it.

Nate Clouse (Husker Online)

-Nebraska offers James Carnie…how important was it for that offer to happen? And will he likely end up at Nebraska? How does he compare to Thomas Fidone?

-This season won’t count against anyone’s eligibility in college sports…will we see a lot more transfers than usual after the season because of that or not?

-Where is Nebraska’s attention focused right now for the next hopeful commitments to the program?

We heard from offensive assistants and players yesterday…what’s the mindset from the team as we are 2 weeks away from the start of the season?

-Another Thursday, another Zoom session with the offensive side of the ball. What revelations came from post-practice this week?

-Dedrick Mills and ‘bell cow’ were words said together that HAD to get Sip extremely happy..

-Other notes and takeaways from the day…

The Drive: May 27th, 4pm

  • What if I told you Dedrick Mills would run for 1,000 yards this season?
  • Michael Bruntz (247Sports)
  • What’s in the Box (Raisin’ Cane’s)

How much of a leap can we expect from Dedrick Mills this season?

-Mills ran 143 times for 745 yards in 2019 (5.2 ypc), and 10 TDs; a very solid season, but some might expect more. Is he a guy who could breakout like Devine Ozigbo did his senior season?

-A reminder on Ozigbo: His junior year stats were 129 carries for 493 yds (3.8 ypc) and 3 TDs; his senior year exploded for 155 carries, 1082 yards (7.0 ypc) and 12 TDs.

The Drive: November 18th, 5pm

  • Dedrick Mills had his best game, more on him or the O-Line?

Dedrick Mills as a fullback going forward? Could it be so…

-Frost and Mills spoke on Monday, and there was some agreement that the fullback look that Nebraska showed Mills at against Ohio State for a nice drive in the second quarter could be something we see more often…now that would be intriguing

-Also, SONG OF THE DAY (sponsored by Sartor Hamann Jewelers):

Happiness is seeing Sip talk life with Dedrick Mills, as the infatuation continues

-Mills showed up to media availability on Monday with a football tucked away in his grip, and media (including Sip) wondered why that was the case…and Sip even asked what would happen if he tried to punch the ball out. The love fest continues!!

Maurice Washington once again showed he is Mr. Big Play / Shut Up Sipple (sponsored by Bagels & Joe)

-How good was Maurice on Saturday? Wow. Scott Frost’s offenses live off of big plays, and Maurice delivered multiple times (as did Dedrick Mills with a long 61-yard run)…can we expect these big plays to continue against better teams?

Through two games, it’s pretty evident that Maurice Washington is Nebraska’s best RB / Shut Up Sipple (sponsored by Bagels & Joe)

-Dedrick Mills ran 8 times for 24 yards, and had 2 catches for 21 yards, compared to Washington’s 15 carries for 77 yards, and 4 catches for 112 yards. Washington also has explosion that Mills doesn’t have. Is it clear that Maurice should be the main back, or does Sip think Mills should get more chances?

-Also, it was nice to see Adrian back in the running game again…better than last week…
