The Spillover with Connor Happer and Mike Schaefer

-It’s Husker game week…are you ready for the busy weeks ahead? It’s arrived….

-Why can’t Nebraska be the B1G’s surprise team this year?

Let’s take a quick step away from the Kool-Aid and hear from former Husker tight end Kurt Rafdal / Shut Up Sipple (sponsored by Bagels & Joe)

-Per Boise State beat reporter B.J. Rains, Rafdal says he hasn’t noticed a dropoff in talent level from Nebraska/Power 5 down to Boise State/Group of 5 so far. But they’re usually a solid program, anyways…

-Also, just shy of 8,000 fans at Nebraska volleyball’s Red-White scrimmage…never ceases to amaze

Could Nebraska possibly be the ‘surprise’ team of the B1G in 2021?

-Think about it—no one has high expectations for the team. 6-7 wins is seen as the common guess when talking to people. No one thinks they’ll be phenomenal, but no one thinks they’ll be terrible

-We always talk about this team being able to get on a heater…why can’t they? No one thought Northwestern would be great last year, and they won the division. Some people thought Minnesota would be good 2 years ago, but not a large amount of people—and they were great

-If anything, Nebraska might be the STRONGEST pick for a sleeper or surprise team in the B1G

You know what’s weird? Seeing former Husker QB Johnny Stanton as a fullback in the NFL

-We’ve addressed this in the past, but it’s so easy to forget about until you see it again—Stanton played significant time for the Browns on Sunday in their preseason game

– Nebraska names it’s 4 captains for the season…did they get it right?

-Adrian Martinez, Austin Allen, Damion Daniels and Cam Taylor-Britt will be the captains. Daniels is the surprise of the group, as some might think Ben Stille or JoJo Domann would be names there…do we read too much into that or not?

-Also, Jake is drinking more and more Tua Kool-Aid as he watches him play in preseason

Holy mother of all things in the world, it is HUSKER GAME WEEK!!!!!

-It’s hard to believe, but there will be an actual Nebraska football game this weekend. The first Big Ten game for any team. Nebraska vs. Illinois. HOT DAMN

-Beyond last week’s news of an NCAA investigation, drama is low—whatever injuries we heard of seem to not be a huge deal (we’ll see about Turner Corcoran if he plays against Illinois, but otherwise pretty clean)

-Think about some of the little things Nebraska could do on Saturday to make you smile AND believe: kickoffs through the end zone, kickoff returns to the 35 yard line, red zone and 3rd down conversions….and winning the turnover battle

More from the first weekend of NFL preseason…what were Jake’s takeaways?

-A hilarious mess in New Orleans with Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston—the Saints had 6 turnovers in their first game, with interceptions by both QBs

-Also, Tua looked good in Miami, Justin Fields played well for Chicago….

A B1G, Pac-12 and ACC alliance? Could be on the horizon / Shut Up Sipple (sponsored by Bagels & Joe)

-The conference commissioners have had preliminary discussions about an alliance which would not force a change of conferences for the different teams in their leagues

-Also, how about former Husker baseball player Jake Meyers hitting 2 home runs on Saturday night for the Astros, with one being a grand slam?!

A tweet sent at Jake that was supposed to be disparaging actually brings some clarity of a connection between Nebraska football and Garth Brooks

-Jake made fun of Iowa in a tweet (typical), and got tough response about it, but one tweet said this: “Name a more iconic duo that hasn’t been relevant since the 90s than Garth Brooks and Nebraska”

-The tweet does make sense, but think about this: Garth Brooks isn’t creating new content, but he’s still playing the hits and drawing thousands and thousands of fans. Think about if Nebraska ‘embraced the hits’ and was able to go power football. Great at it once, went away for awhile…but imagine how bad ass it would be to come back and start to win the way they used to

-Also, how about Dedrick Mills showing out for the Lions in preseason NFL action?

Imagine your first start as a Major League pitcher being a no-hitter…well, that happened this weekend

-Arizona’s Tyler Gilbert made his Major League debut on Saturday and no-hit the San Diego Padres—a team that is on track to make the playoffs.

Scott Frost seemed less concerned about the tight ends’ injuries on Friday than we’ve been hinting

-Frost spoke to the media Friday, and the concern we’ve been hearing about Travis Vokolek and Austin Allen is that they might be missing some serious time….that’s not what it sounds like from Frost’s vantage point

-Are we backing off of Code Red for the injury department there?

We’re only 12 days from opening kickoff, and Garth Brooks reminded us of how fun a packed Memorial Stadium is

-Jake was at the Garth Brooks concert on Saturday night, and has raving reviews for all parts of it—and it was definitely a PACKED house

-The energy from the crowd and that environment is something we haven’t seen in 2 years, and we hope this football season results in a jacked-up fanbase like Saturday night

-Also, Jake has thoughts on alcohol at the stadium, and a strong criticism for Iowa Hawkeye fans following the concert
